How the MexxBot system actually works

See it weld, see how it’s taught, and understand the modes — straight from ABB and Kemppi.

The Kemppi welder on an ABB cobot, welding in a real industrial workshop.
Will a welding cobot take your job? The honest answer for skilled welders.

One system, several modes

  • Manual & auto modes. Teach at reduced speed, then run at full speed in auto — switched on the controller.
  • Drag-and-teach. Guide the arm by hand or jog it with the pendant joystick, on a plain graphical screen. No code.
  • Kemppi welding processes. Manual, synergic and pulse MIG — with ABB Arc Welding Premium included (normally a $1,030 option).
  • Digitally linked. Kemppi’s Connectivity Module ties the welder to the robot, so the robot drives the weld — not two machines you sync by hand.

Built for welders, not programmers

  • ✓  The Kemppi welder and ABB robot are digitally linked through Kemppi's Connectivity Module — the robot drives the weld, so you're not hand-syncing two machines.
  • ✓  Quick-detach torch — lift it off to hand-weld, then click it back for automated welding.
  • ✓  Jog the arm with a real joystick: point it where you want, and teach the point.
  • ✓  On in seconds, with a clear, simple graphical interface.
  • ✓  Operators are typically welding within the hour.

Premium ABB + Kemppi components for roughly half the price of comparable ready-to-weld premium systems — backed by ABB's Australia-wide service network and Mexx Engineering support.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need safety fencing?
For most collaborative applications, no fencing is required. The ABB CRB 1910-10 is a true collaborative robot with integrated torque sensors in all six joints that stop it on contact, certified to Category 3, PL d under ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066. As with any welding cell, a site-specific risk assessment is required before operation to confirm your specific application can run barrier-free — this is the operator's responsibility, and our optional Setup & Training day can help you complete it. You'll also need welding screens to protect people nearby from arc flash, as with any welding.
How difficult is it to program?
ABB's FlexPendant uses graphical Wizard programming — most operators are running their first weld program within hours. No coordinates, no code required. Add our optional Setup & Operator Training day and we'll train your team on-site.
What materials and processes does it weld?
MIG/MAG with solid or cored wire, on mild steel and stainless from 1 to 10 mm as standard. Thin sheet down to 0.5 mm, and aluminium from 1 to 10 mm, need extra Kemppi options. Butt, fillet and lap joints, single or multi-pass, and round seams up to 250 mm diameter without a positioner. The suitability check shows how your own jobs rate.
How does payment work?
All prices are +GST. Payment runs in stages, like ordering a machine tool. (1) Pay a $2,000 + GST ($2,200) deposit online today to lock your price and order slot — fully refundable until we order your parts, then credited to your final invoice. (2) We confirm your specs and invoice 50% to place the order with ABB and Kemppi. (3) The remaining 50% (less your $2,000 deposit) is due before the goods are released from our Arundel factory. Prices are Ex Works Arundel; freight is additional and can be arranged at cost — or bundle delivery with our Setup & Training day.
Do I need setup or training?
The MexxBot is essentially plug-and-play — if you already know ABB OmniCore, power it up and get to work. If your team is new to ABB, add our optional Delivery + Setup & Operator Training Day ($1,950 +GST): we deliver on our own truck, position and power up the cell, run test welds on your material, and train your operators for a full 8-hour day. Included within 100 km of our Arundel factory; further afield, travel is quoted separately. You can also add it later.
What warranty do I get?
The ABB CRB 1910-10 carries ABB's standard 12-month warranty from commissioning. The Kemppi welding package carries Kemppi's standard warranty. Mexx Engineering provides ongoing Australian-based support for the integrated system.
What can't it weld?
As supplied, the robot doesn't do TIG or stick welding, sheet under 0.5 mm, joints the torch can't reach with about 45 mm clearance (such as deep, narrow boxes), or parts whose gaps or position vary by more than ±0.5 mm unless you add the touch-sensing option. Aluminium needs an extra wire-feed kit. Outside these limits a job is often still doable as a custom Mexx solution — call us on (07) 5571 5733.
Will it weld to AS/NZS 1554?
Yes, the MexxBot can produce welds to AS/NZS 1554. As with manual welding, qualifying the weld procedure for your joints, materials and positions is your responsibility.
Can you weld my sample parts before I buy?
Yes. Send us sample parts and we'll weld them at our Arundel workshop. There's a fee, credited against your order if you go ahead.
If it breaks, who comes and how fast?
Phone and remote support next business day. On-site within 48 hours in South-East Queensland. Elsewhere, through ABB's Australian service network.
What does it cost to run each year?
About $500 a year for a general service of the robot and welder, plus the same wire, gas and power as manual welding.
What if I pay the deposit and it doesn't suit?
Your $2,200 deposit is fully refundable until we order your parts. If you're unsure, run the suitability check first or send us sample parts.
Who owns the weld programs?
You do. The programs you teach for your jobs are yours.
Why not a cheaper imported cobot?
It's a genuine ABB cobot, built on the same platform as ABB's industrial robots, with a Kemppi welder digitally linked to it. It's supported by ABB's Australian service network and by us.
